Thirty-five years ago, a student was murdered at private Wakefield College, and the crime is still unsolved. Now the earthquake-damaged English department building is set for demolition, and a time capsule created about the same time as the murder is going to be opened. The plan is to redistribute the items inside to the students who were their original owners. Yet when police detective John Troyer reads the note that his late father had placed in the capsule identifying a friend he'd seen running from the murder scene, the fledgling relationship springing up between Troy and alumni relations director Madison Laclaire takes an unexpected turn: the student Troy's dad saw was Madison's father. Troy quietly reopens the decades-old case, and together he and Madison finally get some answers in this compelling story that's rife with emotional conflict. VERDICT Palpable sexuality, descriptions so vivid you can practically feel the eastern Washington summer heat, and a carefully crafted plot that gradually reveals its secrets while painting an intriguing picture of college life team up for an emotion-laden romance that has more than one surprise. Former public librarian Johnson (Anything for Her) lives in rural Washington State.
