Lord Foul's Bane

From the honorable Stonedowners to the lofty Woodhelvennin to the jolly giant Saltheart Foamfollower (who brings to mind the Ghost of Christmas Present), Scott Brick knows, understands, and embodies them all. Brick gives each character in Donaldson's broad fantasy a distinct vocal intonation and speech pattern, enlivening the tapestry of the Land to an auditory richness that is nearly impossible to turn off. Brick's greatest achievement is in his voicing of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever--he is a leper, "outcast, unclean," and Brick's portrayal brings across every shard of Covenant's self-loathing, every ounce of cynicism and anger at the world for being so cruel. Brick highlights Covenant's stubborn lack of understanding so well that by the end, the listener is inwardly begging for Covenant's ultimate redemption. A.A.
