DCI Silas Quinn is back in what might be his most challenging and intriguing case yet. When Sir Aidan Fonthill, director of the Hampstead Voices choir, is found brutally murdered in the choir's rehearsal room just before their annual Christmas concert, Quinn finds plenty of potential suspects, from Sir Aidan's wife to his fellow musicians to a mysterious "blind stranger" who's seen fleeing from the scene a few minutes after the murder. Quinn's loyal team has been depleted by WWI, transfers to other departments, and promotions, so he's not as confident in his new team of coppers. When tragedy strikes one of the team members during the investigation, Quinn doubles his efforts to solve the case. He soon learns that Sir Aidan was a horrible person with many faults and many dangerous enemies. Set in a vividly rendered London at the beginning of WWI, this is a finely crafted police procedural with a gripping plot, cleverly drawn characters, and a shocking ending.
