Starred review from June 1, 2011
The most prodigiously talented graphic novelist of his late twentiesearly thirties cohort, Powell (Swallow Me Whole, 2008) tells complicated, open-ended stories set in a small-town America open to invasion by fantasy and played out by children and young adults. His longest work to date focuses on two boys and a girl who meet at about 10 years of age and, because they attend the same schools and stay in or return to the same town, get to change their relationships to one another some 10 years later. When they all first meet, Lee and Purdy are both obsessed with playing war but are otherwise quite different boys, and Sarah is an animal lover determined to solve the series of turtle killings that has swept through the neighborhood in the wake of the gang Purdy leads. Ten years on, Lee and Sarah remeet and fall in love, while Purdy is in the army in the Middle East. The fantastic element one expects of Powell intrudes to bring all three back together but, true to Powell's unique vision, only to an unsentimental, ambiguous ending. Powell's exceptional visual-storytelling gift transforms a potentially obvious antiwar parable into a ravishingly beautiful, emotionally resonant, thoughtful, and provocative work of art.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
