A wedding between two families on opposite ends of the political divide kicks off this novel set in contemporary Tehran. Sarah had no intention of getting married, but Ali won her over with his gentle kindness. On the night of their wedding, they are caught up in one of many protests of the 2009 presidential election, and Sarah makes a snap decision to hide a young woman in their car to help her evade arrest. The woman is caught, as are Ali and Sarah, setting off a chain of events with far-reaching consequences. As the novel progresses, Sarah and Ali's families are brought together once again when an act of violence forces them to reconsider their viewpoints. While knowledge of the Iranian Green Wave may be helpful in navigating the complex plot, Sadr provides context throughout the book, giving readers insight into the motives and intentions of the characters. It's an intimate, personal story set within a pivotal period in Iranian history, and Sadr deftly shows how political unrest affects ordinary people in unexpected ways. Readers who enjoy Etaf Rum and Elif Shafak will appreciate this promising debut.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
