Embracing one of the only ways to truly experience a country--from the seat of a bicycle--travel writer Enfield wittily describes his travels along the Danube, specifically the countries of Bavaria, Poland, and Austria. The author reads at a measured, reflective pace reminiscent of the cyclist's deliberate speed. The listener is fascinated by the journey's colorful descriptions, delightful vignettes, and historical observations and is amazed to discover that Enfield is in his 70s, as evidenced by his voice and his personal references to WWII. Enfield not only educates with his local knowledge, but from the perspective of a cyclist he also treats listeners to insights on food, beer, wine, and the hazards and friction involved in having a BBC film crew along on one's trip.
