THE LION'S PRIDE is not an exhaustive biography of Theodore Roosevelt, nor is it an account of his presidential years; it is an intimate look at his relationships with his family, especially his four sons and particularly in time of war. Ted, Kermit, Archie and Quentin grew up hearing stories about the volunteer Rough Riders their father commanded in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. They in turn tested themselves and their ideas of duty, honor, and valor in front-line combat during the First World War. John McDonough narrates in a warm, clear, and straight-forward voice that gives the listener welcome access to this fascinating and little-known aspect of the Roosevelt family. P.G. Renehan takes full advantage of unpublished Roosevelt papers to produce a remarkable portrait of the 26th president and his family. Roosevelt's belief that wealth conveys social responsibility was demonstrated in the Rough Riders' conduct in the Spanish-American War, which became a model for five of his children and others who served in World War I. Roosevelt was also the epitome of inclusive liberal republicanism. Narrator John McDonough, with his deep, rich bass, has a marvelous empathy with the heroic citizen-soldier who inspired a nation. This recording conveys the meaning of being a citizen in a democracy. Highly recommended. James L. Dudley, Westhampton Beach, NY
