The grim reality of war is vividly recalled in this well-researched and well-written work of fiction. Redcap is the nick-name of a boy named Ransom Powell. He is from western Maryland and relates to us his service in a Virginia (later, West Virginia) Unionist regiment. Captured in early 1864, he survives the notorious Andersonville prison. Heller's reading is excellent. At first, his voice may seem a bit too mature for this work. However, he convincingly portrays the coming of age of a boy who must all too early become a man. Especially compelling are Ransom's recollections of Andersonville prison. M.T.F. (c) AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine

These vivid historical novels each center on an imperiled male protagonist: in the first, a 13-year-old lies about his age to enlist in the Union Army, while The Raid brings danger for 14-year-old Lige when his brother is kidnapped in an Indian attack. Ages 10-up.
