Lyle, neuro-linguistic programming practitioner and founder of Laughter Business, introduces readers to Laughter Yoga, the practice of “laughing for no reason” popularized by Dr. Madan Kataria, and its physical and psychological benefits. She details her trip to study with Kataria at the School of Ancient Wisdom in India, his methods, and her struggle with doubt and self-criticism that was resolved in a powerful “moment of simple joy.” Lyle started a “laughter club” at a pub where members experience joy through laughter and group activities. Scientifically, Lyle discusses laughter as a natural stress reliever and empathic response that strengthens the immune system and increases blood flow and pain tolerance. She shares examples of therapeutic exercises, some Dr. Kataria’s and some her own, including speaking gibberish, “milkshake laughter,” and bringing levity to otherwise dull tasks. Lyle also recommends practicing a state of childlike exuberance that she calls “Elliotology,” named after a friend’s two-year-old son. Additionally, her guide to self-hypnosis purports to manage the symptoms of psychosomatic illnesses. This is a good introductory text to Laughter Yoga, and Lyle’s narrative adds a personal touch; however, much of this information is available on her own website for free.
