Tyne Jensen is a young black woman, a budding journalist who is about to find herself between jobs and a long time between relationships. At her sister's wedding, she meets David Carvelli, a handsome young architect whose dissolving partnership threatens his career. David feels an attraction, while Tyne feels repelled; both are powered by strange dreams they have been having of a forbidden love and passionate pursuit that leads to murder. David's mother, Carmen, is a psychic who senses a danger that connects her son to a man from the distant past with unresolved anger and violent proclivities. Carmen teams with a college student studying the genealogy of her family and is intrigued by the mysterious murder of a black schoolteacher in the late 1800s in New York. Cullars' debut novel skillfully weaves a passionate affair between a black woman and a wealthy white scion at the turn of the century in New York with a contemporary interracial affair in modern--day Chicago through a supernatural tale of love and redemption.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2006, American Library Association.)
