Verdict: Clarke chronicles her restoration of a house in the walled-in section of Fez in rapturously evocative prose infused with the sounds and smells of Morocco. The result is a magical combination of travel writing and a love letter to a country. Background: Peppered with lush local details-the scent of the tanneries and the hubbub of activity in the alleys and market stalls-this book follows the author's heroic efforts to restore a house in Morocco using handmade materials. Clarke (arts editor, Courier-Mail, Australia) relates how she learned to navigate bureaucracy, unreliable contractors, linguistic difficulties, and delays with patience and good humor. She intersperses her impressions with analysis of the region's history and the Arab, Roman, Berber, North African, and Spanish influences on religious practices, art, and architecture.-Lisa Nussbaum, Buffalo, NY
