Last year's Dreamcatcher marked the debut of McCall, who has six previously published works under the name Sharon Sala. Morgan Tallchief is devastated when his high school sweetheart Kathleen Ryder is killed in an explosion after a school track meet. Sixteen years later, Tallchief, now a renowned artist, is living in a remote area of New Mexico when Kathleen reappears with a daughter that Morgan didn't know he had. It turns out that Kathleen's family has been in the Witness Protection Program for years and the explosion and subsequent death was nothing but a cover-up by the government. What should have been a joyful reunion falls flat as the two blame each other for circumstances over which neither had any control. Tallchief shows promise at the onset but becomes diffuse later on. McCall also loses credibility by bringing in a star "spy" car that hardly seems worth the gas to fill it up, much less the millions that the FBI supposedly spent on it.

When Kathleen Ryder walks out of the desert and into artist Morgan Tallchief's life 16 years after he thought he saw her die in a fire, he vows she will never leave him again. But Kathleen is being pursued; and protecting her and their teenaged daughter from a ruthless, greedy killer takes determination, family involvement, and skills Morgan hasn't drawn upon since his days in the SEALs. A brave, resilient heroine and a mesmerizing, larger-than-life hero who protects his own at all costs create a compelling, intensely emotional story of enduring love. Unexpected flashes of humor, a warm depiction of contemporary Native American culture, and intelligent writing add to its allure. McCall (Jackson Rule, Harper, 1996), who also writes as Sharon Sala, lives in Oklahoma.
