As regular readers of Estleman's western fiction know, Deputy U.S. Marshall Page Murdock has led a rather hectic life. In Wild Justice, set in 1896, Estleman sends Murdock on a cross-country train trip, from Montana to Delaware, escorting the body of Judge Harlan Blackthorne to his final resting place. This gives Murdock (who is evidently writing these reminiscences from several years into the twentieth century) plenty of time to look back at his time as an enforcer of the law, regaling us with some of the more entertaining, memorable, and occasionally life-threatening situations he's found himself in. The novel's episodic structure never feels disjointed, and the cross-country trip is a perfect framing device. Estleman, a pro's pro in genre fiction who easily jumps from westerns to historical sagas to crime fiction, adopts a comfortable, conversational writing style that invites the reader to settle in and enjoy the ride.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
