Giulia Driscoll has left the convent behind and now operates her private investigation shop with the same firm hand that wielded a ruler in the classroom. She's hired by the owner of a lighthouse bed-and-breakfast on Conneaut Lake, PA, to examine her haunted inn. Not prone to flights of fancy, Giulia can't decide if the apparitions are real or the manifestation of someone trying to run the Stone's Throw Lighthouse out of business. And when the owner falls off a widow's walk where the railing was perfectly fine earlier, Giulia knows she has to bring the investigation to a close before someone gets killed. VERDICT Driscoll's second solo turn as a sleuth (after Nun Too Soon) offers a fun and fast read with a lot of appeal. Readers who like cozies with a soupcon of the mystical may take to this series.

Former nun Giulia Driscoll, owner of Driscoll Investigations, is hired by MacAllister Mac Stone to find out who is haunting her lakeside bed-and-breakfast, Stone's Throw, and its associated lighthouse. Giulia and her husband, police officer Frank Driscoll, travel to Stone's Throw to work undercover. Soon, there is sobbing in the night, gunk flowing from a shower head, suddenly spoiled food, and attempts on Giulia and Mac's lives. Is the inn being haunted by one of Mac's long-dead relatives, or is someone trying to force Mac from her newly, expensively renovated inn? When one of the psychics channels Mac's ancestor, Mac believes a supernatural explanation is more likely. Giulia doesn't believe in ghosts, and her suspects include some of the inn's guests, a couple of psychics, one of Mac's relatives, and even Mac herself. Giulia solves the case, saving a life in the process, and she is handsomely rewarded. Giulia is a sympathetic, well-drawn character who has built a full life for herself after leaving the convent, but appealing touches of the former nun remain.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
