A collection of stories originally published in the 1950s shows that the late Kelton (Texas Standoff?, 2010) was not just a master at creating fully fleshed-out heroes and villains in a setting as unforgiving as it is beautiful, but that he also had a soft spot for the love of a good woman. Each of these 14 tales features some measure of a love story, whether it's in the midst of a cattle drive ("Side Saddle Sweetheart"), a shootout ("The Lord Sent an Outlaw"), or a rodeo ("Rodeo Clown"). "The Moocher," one of the few modern-day stories, is also one of the lightest, featuring a woman who won't let her no-good brother spoil her romance with a rancher. Traditional western fans need not worry, though; the stories are still more shotguns than sentimentality. Instead, love drives Kelton's heroes to take up for justice, if not always for the law, amid the dry grass and mesquite.
