Here's a delightful collection of true stories easily digestible food for the soul. Most, like Sylvia Bright-Green's A Scrooge Christmas? reveal ordinary circumstances illuminated by the spirit of Christmas. When the mother of adult children shares her disappointment and perplexity at receiving combat boots and a chunk of wood as presents, the response is surprising. Several stories, like Murphey's Alone and Broke at Christmas, celebrate the kindness of strangers. Still others convey the challenges of coping with homelessness, life-threatening illnesses, and disabilities while still appreciating the joys of the season. Some are real gems, like Chris Griffin's Mama's Wish, which portrays an appreciation of Santa and snowflakes as seen through the eyes of a slightly demented senior mellowed to childhood wonder by a series of strokes. This book harkens back to the true spirit of Christmas without shopping malls and online shopping. A good choice for library holiday shelves.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
