Performance improves performance is the premise of this work. Salit (CEO, Performance of a Lifetime) contends that employing standard acting and improvisation techniques can help heighten a person's work outcomes. The author draws on her extensive background in improvisation to show how simple exercises are able to transform us into the individuals we wish to become. While the emphasis is on theatrical skills, the book's goal is to assist in developing an authentic self; not an imposter. Salit demonstrates ways to bolster connections with coworkers and clients by saying yes, helping others look good, embracing mistakes, allowing others to lead, behaving in an unexpected way, and following our fear. Each chapter presents easy-to-follow steps to reinforce the principles introduced. A list of recommended readings rounds out the work. VERDICT Readers seeking a prescriptive guide to performance may be put off by the author's improvisational approach. However, patrons looking for creative strategies to revamp their professional performance will develop skills that can easily be adapted to any setting.
