Collins, a priest who has already written a biography of Pope Benedict XVI, offers a slim, crisp overview of John Paul II's tenure as pope. Beginning with a glimpse into Karol Wojtly's early life, the book quickly moves on to his career in the church. Though much attention is paid to the big issues he confrontedcommunism, secularism, and the rift between Catholics and Jewsthere is also a surprising amount of behind-the-scenes information: his everyday life, his friendships, his devotion to Mary. Besides the accessible text, one of the best things about the book is it's inviting format: snow-white pages, an easy-to-read typeface, and many well-chosen photographs. A preface in which Collins recalls his meetings with the pope makes clear from the beginning that he is a fan, and after reading this volume, many will understand his high assessment.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
