Square, author of the popular "Knitter's Companion" and two pattern compilations based on folk traditions, "Folk Bags" and "Folk Hats", here turns her attention to the kimono, a traditional Japanese garment with a soft drape that adapts well to a knitted fabric and is flattering on almost any figure. The featured 18 kimonos, both long and short, are notable for a variety of stitch patterns and yarns, including a "Fan Kimono" knitted with a lacy stitch pattern resembling a fan shape and a striking "Medallions & Scrolls" kimono featuring repeated motifs worked in a combination of Fair Isle and intarsia techniques. All patterns are within the skill range of intermediate knitters and are photographed from several angles, with close-up shots of details, schematics, and charts. Highly recommended for public libraries.

As lovely as many knitting books are, few can be called innovative. This attractive offering changes that equation. Not only does Square present 18 arrestingly designed patterns for kimonos, but she also does a fine job of explaining the history behind the traditional kimonos on which her patterns are based. Beginning with kimono basics, especially the versatility of the garments retangular shape, she proceeds with a fascinating look at how the kimono was designed and worn during each period of Japanese history and how it stacks up against Western clothing. A two-page spread, Design Your Own Kimono, full of stitch counts and variations, is followed by the patterns themselves, some of which employ a folk-art style, others a woven look. Still others are intricately patterned or use color work. From vests to longer jackets, all the pieces look incredibly comfortable, and Square clearly conveys the affection she has for this staple of Japanese wear. Crisp color photographs and exceedingly clear instructions make this a standout.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
