Baseball is a game that attracts superstitions. Like a pair of ghost busters, Gordon ("Cape Encounters: Contemporary Cape Cod Ghost Stories") and Bradley, a freelance sports writer, have mined a rich underground of bizarre and often unexplainable tales to liven up our reading. Did a friend's Ouija board predict Lou Gehrig's demise? Did Robert Clemente have a startling premonition of his early death in an airplane crash? Is a goat's curse really the reason for the longtime futility of the Chicago Cubs in seeking the World Series? Did a beloved baseball trainer visit his team in the guise of a strange bird that hung around the dugout? We learn that the ashes of former players and fans have been strewn around both major and minor league ballparks. Do these ashes have a magical power that some Harry Potter could unleash for us? Filled with anecdotes and superstitions relating to yesterday's and today's teams and stars, these are fun, strange tales that will be savored, especially if read aloud around a campfire.
