UK-based knitwear designer Allis has published patterns in a number of popular knitting magazines, and her first book-length collection focuses on her true passion--beaded lace. An introduction provides an overview of lace knitting techniques, with a focus on specialty cast-ons and bind-offs commonly used. However, only one technique for adding beads to knitted lace is included--an unusual choice for a book that concentrates on beaded lace knitting. The patterns are organized by skill level, with the easiest first--however, "easy" is relative, since even those designs feature complex knitting. Each pattern includes written and charted instructions, as well as close-ups of the lace motif and photos of the shawl worn by a model. The charts for each shawl are exceptionally clear, which is especially helpful as the lacework becomes more complex. VERDICT Adventurous knitters who enjoy luxurious knitwear will appreciate this collection of exquisite beaded shawls, but they may want to supplement with additional information on techniques for adding beads to their knitting.
