After decades when baseball drew life from fan interest in its statistics for player performance (batting average, slugging average, earned-run average), the game may now be dying because of the story implicit in one little-noted statisticthe average age of those now watching the game is 56. Jacoby recognizes the threat to a game she learned to love as an underage habitue of her grandfather's bar, watching the White Sox playing on the television screen. But she argues that with the right promotional strategiessuch as scheduling more afternoon games on weekends and admitting children to such games freebaseball might again attract young people, African Americans, and women, despite the constant bombardment of electronic distractions that have drawn eyeballs elsewhere. Offering hope for the future are the already swelling numbers of Latino fans. What Jacoby strenuously warns against are experiments that would reinvent the game by vitiating its essenceby, for instance, starting extra innings with a runner on second. A timely meditation on the precarious state of America's national pastime.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
