Pioneer of -compassionate conservatism, - Olasky (The Tragedy of American Compassion) turns to Katrina to show how politicians place political gain uppermost in their response to such calamities. Briefly outlining the historical increase in U.S. federal oversight of natural disasters, he condemns the -paperocracy - that now dominates government and he urges businesses and faith-based groups, with government support, to be further empowered for disaster aid. His attention to practical details, i.e., how every individual should be prepared for emergencies, will be helpful to readers.
