This collection spotlights innovators in the evolution of pop music, women who broke artistic boundaries, boldly defined themselves, shared strong messages--but didn't always receive the recognition of their male counterparts. Editor McDonnell (Queens of Noise: The Real Story of the Runaways; journalism & new media, Loyola Marymount Univ.) has compiled 100 thoughtful profiles of these individuals. The diversity of the subjects is exceptional--Mahalia Jackson, Janis Joplin, Ronnie Spector, Karen Carpenter, Kathleen Hanna, Rihanna, Pussy Riot--as are the varying genres they represent: folk, rock, gospel, country, punk, blues, rap, and more. In addition, each well-written essay was penned by one of more than two dozen writers (including Daphne A. Brooks, Kandia Crazy Horse, and Caryn Rose), whose distinct perspectives and styles add a multilayered energy to the book. Beautiful full-color illustrations, rendered by several talented artists, capture the essence of each woman. McDonnell's incisive introduction and carefully selected playlists and comprehensive section summaries are also helpful. VERDICT This highly informative and visually appealing volume will be welcomed by readers interested in pop music and the women shaping its development. An important addition to performing arts, cultural studies, and feminist collections.--Carol J. Binkowski, Bloomfield, NJ
