A Tibetan monk and founder of Nithartha International, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche presents an explanation of two advanced methods of practice in Tibetan Buddhism. Mahamudra (The Great Seal) and Dzogchen (The Great Perfection) are esoteric practices about which Westerners are curious and about which much is being written. Some aspects of these practices remain secret, and genuine practice requires the guidance of an experienced teacher, but this volume goes a long way toward demystifying the concepts involved. These are not, however, ideas that are easily described or easily grasped. Although the author does an admirable job of expressing things in accessible language, readers will need some familiarity with Buddhist thought as well as patience with the Buddhist proclivity for lists in order to appreciate fully what is being presented. Not for beginners, but a valuable addition to the growing literature regarding advanced practice techniques; recommended for academic collections and larger public libraries.-Mark Woodhouse, Elmira Coll.
