In this delightful book (originally self-published in 2008), the Crocodile Hunter meets James Herriot for an engaging look at the trials and tribulations of being a veterinarian in South Africa. Aronson's patients run the gamut from highly venomous puff adders to elephants, crocodiles, cheetahs, gemsboks, and rhinos. Trained as a small-animal practitioner, Aronson also treated his fair share of pets, mainly dogs and cats, with the occasional unusual creature. He introduces himself very matter-of-factly--"My name is Roy Aronson. I am a South African veterinarian"--but his collection of stories is totally entertaining, and his deep commitment to wildlife and conservation comes through clearly. Readers will enjoy venturing into the African bush with Aronson but will be grateful to do so from the safety of their lounge chairs. VERDICT This fascinating book is hard to put down; it will be enjoyed by a wide variety of readers of many ages. Note that Aronson is working with the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and Animal Planet to produce a series by the same name.--Edell M. Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., WI
