Alice isweather-beaten and spare, worn down by the rigors of keeping the family ranch profitable in the harsh and unforgiving southeastern Washington mountains. So its no surprise to her when Domingo, the young Mexican vaquero she rescues from certain death in a snowstorm, thinks she is a man. Even though Domingo and his horse narrowly escape the latest INS sweep, he is desperate to remain in the area. Consequently, he gratefully accepts Alices offer to hire him, although both know it could lead to trouble with the authorities. Interactions withAlices sister Janet and various neighbors, as well as with unfriendly elements and local law-enforcement officials, provide complex subplots and substance to Fostersstory line. Fosters own experiences as an ESL teacher and resident of the area enhance the authenticity of her debutnovel, which is told from both Alices and Domingosperspectives with a wealth of descriptive detail and insights intosocial issues rooted in the realities of immigration, labor, and property law.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
