This is the story of a crumbling marriage, middle age, nature, and sailing the Pacific Ocean. Scott (columnist, Honolulu Star-Advertiser) covers a wide range of topics in this memoir, which proves to be both a plus and a minus. Feeling that her marriage is coming apart, the author chooses to embark on a seafaring voyage and to volunteer on an atoll over a thousand miles from Hawai'i as a way to rediscover her middle-aged self. Scott is an excellent storyteller and the pain of her unraveling union with husband Craig is tangible. The stories of her exploits as a novice sailor and captain navigating a 1,000-mile stretch of open water are exciting and exhausting. However, the addition of many small characters and multiple story lines also clutters her tale and makes for an occasionally unclear narrative. The author's adventures as wildlife volunteer and sailor are nearly overshadowed by the accounts describing her marriage--but not quite, resulting in a slightly muddied but honest and well-told memoir. VERDICT A strong read for fans of memoirs or sailing stories that might also interest anyone in the midst of a divorce.--Sara Miller Rohan, Archive Librarian, Atlanta
