Some 20 years after her husband was brutally murdered, Emily Tarell asks forensic artist Annie Kingston to create an updated sketch of the killer, who was never caught. At first, Annie resists; she knows all too well that to determine how the killer's face has aged and changed, she will have to enter his mind and understand his fears and motives. But Annie's recent commitment to God pricks at her heart when the widow says, "I know you're God's answer to my prayers." As Annie delves into the darkness of the criminal's world, somebody wants to stop her at all costs. This second title (after Brink of Death) in Collins's "Hidden Faces" series is a competent thriller, but the mystery becomes transparent too soon. Still, stories about forensics currently enjoy great popularity, and this novel may have crossover appeal for fans of Patricia Cornwell's "Kay Scarpetta" series. Collins resides in Coeur d'Alene, ID, and the California Bay Area.
