How are metabolism, physiology, and behavior linked to obesity? Power and Schulkin-researchers at the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists and coeditors of Birth, Distress, and Disease: Placental-Brain Interactions-offer a combination of medical anthropology, human biology, and a forbidding amount of scientific and mathematical information to answer that question. Chapters conclude with helpful summaries, but a glossary would have aided comprehension. Verdict: While the authors hoped that their study would attract "a broad readership," the text is a hard slog. The book is appropriate for large research libraries, as well as academic and medical libraries, but for a more accessible treatment, consult Ellen Ruppel Shell's The Hungry Gene: The Science of Fat and the Future of Thin.
