The 23 stories collected in this volume are crafted by both native-born authors and American/Canadian writers of Asian descent. Contributors include promising talent such as Fonda Lee and E.C. Myers yet oddly omits established names such as Ken Liu and Alyssa Wong are omitted. In Song Dynasty China, two brothers find themselves possessed--by the "Spirit of Wine," a tale by Tony Pi. In Angela Yuriko Smith's "Vanilla Rice," a Japanese mother's despair over her own looks drives her to make a radical decision for her daughter. VERDICT Part of the publisher's "Anthology" series (after Strangers Among Us), this fascinating collection addresses issues of immigration, dual cultures, and ethnic issues through genre devices such as ghosts, steampunk robots, and planetary exploration. Sf readers looking to discover new voices will enjoy this volume that reflects the eclecticism of Asian culture.--KC

This collection brings together a varied and broad selection of sf and fantasy stories all united by a shared interest in exploring Asian themes and identity in genre fiction. The range of genres explored is broad, including Tony Pi's Spirit of Wine, a fantasy story about body-hopping ghosts in Song dynasty China; Miki Dare's A Star Is Born, which tells the story of an elderly Japanese Canadian woman time-traveling along her own potential pasts; Joyce Chng's Decision, a brief story about family and independence among mythical creatures; and Naru Dames Sundar's The Orphans of Nilaveli, which imagines a future in which cybernetic implants are used to make Tamil refugees literally invisible. All of the stories in this anthology explore the potential for genre fiction that concerns itself with a more diverse array of identities and histories. Coupled with coeditor Mak's afterword, which contains an overview of anthologies, translations, and prominent Asian authors in genre fiction, this collection is essential for anyone interested in the diverse and engaging possibilities of fantasy and science fiction.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
