Into the Dark

Gr 9 Up-Mercy, Layla, and Jay are at a party when Mercy is grabbed and almost choked to death. When she wakes, everything is a bit hazy, except for the fact that she is in Layla's body. Her best friend Jay (Layla's boyfriend) finally believes she really is in Layla's body. When Jay leaves, Gage, a new boy at school, tries to explain to her that a breacher is someone who can transfer from one body to another, and why he is a hunter for the assembly, working to kill all breachers. He is currently on a mission to kill Nathaniel, the breacher who was choking Mercy. He neglects to mention that since Mercy is a breacher, too, she will soon be on his list. The dialogue is fantastic, the plot well structured, and the action nonstop, and the suspense of who is telling the truth will keep teen readers captivated right through the end. There is just enough introspection to keep readers engaged with the characters, but not too much to keep them away from the fast-paced action. VERDICT A unique mix of science fiction, action/adventure, suspense, and romance.-Cathleen Ash, Manor High School Library, TX
