DOGO Books
noodles54 - The book that I read was Juggling Fire by Joanne Bell. My book is about a girl named Rachel who has many unanswered questions about her father. No one knows what happen to her dad but he just disappeared when she was a small child. She's on a quest to find her dad but she doesn't use transportation to find him. She's hiking with her dog Brooks. I really thought this book was amazing because I've never even really read a book that involves looking for a person so close to you. Rachel was so determined to find her father. The genre was realistic fiction because this could happen to someone. There could be a person right now trying to find their dad or someone else close to them. That person trying to find their dad or someone close to them will do whatever it takes to find them. The kind of people that would like to read this book is people who like to read about determined people or adventurous books because the majority of the book is about Rachel going on an adventure to find her dad and she'll do whatever it takes until she finds him. In the book Rachel faces a man v.s nature conflict. She has to hike, walk, and run in the woods and mountains to find her father.

Gr 7-10-Sixteen-year-old Rachel's father disappeared years earlier from her family's home in the Yukon wilderness and was assumed dead. Having finished high school, the teen sets off on a trek through the tundra and forest with only her dog as a companion, hoping to find clues about her father's disappearance at the cabin where she lived as a child. Rachel's main interest aside from juggling is memorizing and rewriting fairy tales, which are woven into the main narrative as a story within a story. Finally, she is able to come to terms with her grief and find her own happy ending. Bell beautifully captures the natural world through descriptions of the mountainous terrain as well as nail-biting encounters with bears and wolves. Rachel is a smart, resourceful narrator who nevertheless struggles with the challenges nature throws her way, as well as balancing her own needs and those of her dog. Like Gary Paulsen's "Hatchet" (Bradbury, 1987) and Ben Mikaelsen's "Touching Spirit Bear" (HarperCollins, 2001), this book will appeal to readers looking for an outdoor adventure, though it's a quieter, more contemplative read."Jennifer Barnes, formerly at Homewood Library, IL"
