Gr 5-9-Middle-schooler Rith loves fantasy books, rock climbing, and his baby sister. He hates his stepfather, Walt, and going to church with his family. One night he is surprised to find a spiral wooden staircase in place of the normal staircase down to the living room. At the bottom, he meets a man whom he comes to refer to as "Bible Man" because he speaks in biblical verses (using the Revised Standard Version). Rith becomes fascinated with trying to interpret them and ultimately uses them to make decisions that improve his relationship with his stepfather. He also learns the truth about his father, whom he has always idealized. Rith's sweet relationship with his young sister is nicely drawn, but the rest of the story falls flat. Because Bible Man's only dialogue is verses from the Bible, he is unable to explain his fantasy world, causing the magical elements to feel tacked on. While Rith is Lutheran, there's not much in the story that is doctrinal. However, toward the end of the book there is a scene in which communion is discussed: "the wafer is Jesus' body." Ultimately, though, the book is really about exploring one's religion, whatever it is, and learning how to question it constructively. This book will be a hard sell to most kids. Purchase where there is demand for Christian fiction with fantasy elements."Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH"
