Gr 9 Up-Seventeen-year-old Sofi Snow, now considered an imminent terrorist threat by Earth's United World Council, continues the hunt for brother Shilo, who had been forcibly taken to the alien Delonese ice planet in The Evaporation of Sofi Snow. Assisted by former playboy and crush Ambassador Miguel, she will stop at nothing to bring Shilo home. On Earth, Inola, Sofi's physically and emotionally distant CEO mother, is grappling with her responsibilities as a parent and a corporate executive. What originally began as Inola's innocent quest for a cure to cancer had become something much more sinister. Had she gone too far in allowing her own children to be genetically engineered? Was Shilo still alive? If so, would Sofi and Shilo understand the extent of their abilities, and would they use them for good? Readers of the previous volume will have a much better grasp of the plot of this fast-paced thriller. Three-dimensional characters are well developed and supportive in this heartbreaking sequel of love and triumph. Questions provided by the author make this a welcome title in ethics discussions. Weber's sequel offers timely explorations of themes of family, compassion, genetic engineering, and human trafficking. VERDICT Highly recommended for sci-fi fans.-Susan Harris, Ridgeway High School, TN

After being framed for a terrorist attack at the Fantasy Fighting Games, gamer Sofi Snow is determined to find her missing younger brother, Shilo, who is believed by everyone to have been killed during the bombing.Joined by her ex-boyfriend, the black-eyed, Spanish-speaking Ambassador Miguel Perez, brown-skinned Sofi has infiltrated the planet Delon in an attempt to find Shilo. The Delonese, an alien species who have parked their planet next to Earth's moon, have been using human children in medical experiments in exchange for their technologically advanced cures, a secret agreement orchestrated by Corp 30 CEO Inola, who is also Sofi's estranged mother. While searching for Shilo, Sofi and Miguel discover a horrifying secret that could have catastrophic results for Earth's citizens and the Delonese. While Inola uses her security forces to track Sofi, time is running out, as the Delonese have captured both her and Miguel. In this sequel to The Evaporation of Sofi Snow (2017), Weber takes a darker tone, delving into alien abduction, experimentation on children, the machinations of power-hungry politicians, and black-market corruption.Though it is a little challenging to sort through the abundance of slick, cliched politicians, this is a well-paced page-turner.
