Gr 9 Up-After being kicked out of two other foster homes, 17-year-old Hailey Brown is placed with the Campbells, a well-off family who seem truly to care for her. With her new family and in her new school, Hailey feels like she just might be able to rise above the limits of her old life. Finally, she is safe from her drug-addict mother and her manipulative ex-boyfriend. But then she falls for her foster brother, school quarterback Brad, who falls for her right back. If she chances a relationship with Brad, she also risks being kicked out of her new home, and Hailey refuses to go back. This is a forbidden romance with jealous friends, suspenseful and flirtatious moments, and Brad, the perfect teenage heartthrob. However, the story focuses on Hailey's emotional growth against a backdrop of real-life setbacks: the stark class difference between Hailey and the Campbells and Hailey's own history of neglect and abuse. Amid a well-developed supporting cast of friends and foes, Hailey learns not just what real love could be, but also how to love and stand up for herself. VERDICT Add this book to YA collections where teen romance is popular.-Erica Ruscio, Rockport Public Library, MA
