Village girl encounters magic, heads to the big city, and meets a handsome knight and steam-carriages.Sixteen-year-old Emeline lives in a village so small and remote that they don't even use money, but when she and her brother spot an Ithin, a legendary Dark Creature, they, along with their widowed father, a neighbor, and a stowaway, head to the capital: The law requires they report the sighting to the king in person. Along the way they meet a Lash Knight and become embroiled in the philosophical and political feud between Sapients and Theurgists. Lovely illustrations from Kipin (The Language of Thorns, 2017) elevate this debut but don't make up for the nonexistent plot (mostly conversation and sightseeing) or the haphazard worldbuilding. Technology ranges from nonexistent to programmable automata; silver is used for bullets and any number of other uses for which it's likely too soft; magic runs in the Keldare people, but at the same time anyone can join the Keldare. Imagination is on full display, but multiple threads compete to be the central seam, to the detriment of narrative flow. Note that the art depicts Emeline as darker-skinned and love interest Reese lighter; the text focuses mostly on fashion and finance, not skin tone, although some variation is implied.Original but too sloppily executed for success. Gr 4 Up-Emeline lives in a quiet village with her energetic brother and bookish father. She's content with her simple life until the day she rescues her brother from what seems to be a Dark Creature in the woods across the river. As witnesses to the strange creature, Emeline and her brother Dale are required by law to report the sighting to the king. She sets off with her brother, her father, a neighbor (to drive the wagon and provide protection), and a stowaway. Along the way they encounter a Lash Knight, one of the king's soldiers, and a grumpy king's counselor. Emeline learns that the king is advised by two groups: the Sapients who don't believe in Dark Creatures or magic, and the Theurgists, who do believe in them. Both groups are willing to do anything to get what they want-the king's ear. This puts Emeline at risk because she has her own kind of magic. Determined to protect her people and her secret, Emeline and her companions find themselves in the midst of a large, baffling city, and politics that they don't understand. But with the help of Sir Reese, the Lash Knight, Emeline just might find the courage to face the dangers around her. A delightfully fresh fantasy that mixes science and magic in fascinatingly complex ways. Grades 8-11 Emeline and her brother Dale are horrified to discover that the legends they've been told all their lives about dark creatures in the woods are absolutely true, when they find themselves on the wrong side of their village's protective moat and encounter one of the monsters face-to-face. To make matters even more alarming, in this world where the existence of magic is considered more folklore than fact, Emeline has awakened powers of her own. When her village decides her family go report the creature sighting to the king, a fantasy journey ensues, complete with armed robbers, dashing knights, and poignant political plots all around. This contains all the best aspects of fantasy and romance, giving us a heroine readers will be cheering for from the start. Kipin provides gorgeous illustrations as one might see in a Japanese light novel or more detailed panels in manga now and again, giving body to certain important scenes.
