Gr 9 Up-After a recap of The Forsaken (S & S, 2012), this follow-up takes off on its own engrossing, suspense-filled adventure. Romantic duo Alenna and Liam have escaped the prison colony "the wheel" and sought safe harbor at Destiny Station. Soon after their arrival, it is attacked by government forces, and the inhabitants must make a perilous journey to an outpost headed by the enigmatic Dr. Barrett. Filled with action, the book follows Alenna and Liam as they join other teen escapees from the wheel and follow Dr. Barrett and his army back to it to free their friends and establish a rebel stronghold. The perilous return journey ends in near tragedy as a betrayal causes the capture of Dr. Barrett and all under his command. Alenna and Liam manage to escape captivity, but must hide from the feelers, the government's mechanical killing machines. Twists and turns abound as the characters confront surprises and deception from all sides. The ending, though satisfying, leaves room for Alenna, Liam, and their band of rebels to return in the ultimate battle to overthrow the tyrannical government. Romance, intrigue, adventure, and science fiction blend harmoniously in this captivating sequel that can stand alone. Be warned, however, that readers will become attached to the characters and want to go back to read the first book, now available in paperback.-Cindy Wall, Southington Library & Museum, CT
