Johnis, a 16-year-old, is the unwilling and unwanted companion of several other youths on a quest, their people threatened by another tribe calledthe Horde. Aided by cute white bunny-bat critters and threatened by red-eyed black variations, the group ventures into desert, cave, and underwater locales, and endures inclement weather, deprivation, and troubled group dynamics.
