Whitfield Calder, Earl of Danning, is not pleased when his old friend and most excellent valet, Quimby, has ruined his peaceful fishing retreat by arranging for a house party that includes three eligible ladies and their families. Whit reluctantly gives in, knowing he will most certainly not propose. Likewise, independent, fiery Ruby Hollingsford, tricked into attending by her social-climbing father, is not about to play the silly courtship game. Naturally, Quimby--and the lord--have other ideas. VERDICT A smart, outspoken heroine and a down-to-earth, admirable nobleman find love despite their preconceived notions and a villain who has deadly ideas. This engaging, witty inspirational Regency nicely continues Scott's appealing upstairs/downstairs series. Scott (The Courting Campaign) lives in southeastern Washington State.

Ruby Hollingsford is tired of her father trying to marry her off to a nobleman. So when her father announces that he has secured an invitation for her to the Earl of Danning's house party, Ruby decides enough is enough. She will begrudgingly attend the party, but she has no intention of putting her name in the running to become the next Countess of Danning. Whitfield Calder, the Earl of Danning, isn't looking for a wife, but his valet, Mr. Quimby, thinks it is high time for his master to marry. Unbeknownst to Whitfield, Quimby sends out invitations to a country-house party to three different ladies, hoping that at least one will meet with Whitfield's approval. Marriage remains the last thing on Whitfield's mind, until he meets Ruby. Scott (The Courting Campaign, 2013) continues her expertly crafted Master Matchmaker series with a sweetly told tale of love between a refreshingly different Regency hero and heroine.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
