Jensen Murphy is finally free of the death loop that kept her reliving her
murder for three decades (as related in Only the Good Die Young). She and her friend and rescuer, Amanda Lee Minter, resolve to use their various supernatural abilities to help others. Their first task is helping Heidi Schmidt, whose friend Nichelle is in danger from Nichelle’s hot-headed boyfriend, Tim. A ghost’s attempt to manipulate Tim’s sleeping mind might be the small impetus needed to undermine his self-control and send him over the edge into murderous violence. Jensen is also a target of spectral stalkers, and
being dead may not protect her from their malevolence. Green offers engaging characters and snappy patter, although at times she struggles to keep all of the balls in the air. Murphy’s demon-haunted world can be a terrible place where innocents suffer, but also one where the dead may hope for justice from beyond the grave.

Green's Jensen Murphy mystery series is a trope quilting project. Starting with Only the Good Die Young and now Another One Bites the Dust, the ongoing paranormal mystery of Jensen's traumatic horror filmstyle death and her ghost's determination to sort things out for herself and others is a sewn-together collection of well-worn genre trappings with just the right sense of humor and pacing to make it work. Just as most private-investigator situations unfold, a young woman suspecting foul play enlists Jensen, through her medium, to keep an eye on a friend's potentially murderous boyfriend. But matters are complicated when the prevailing paranormal-thriller story is interrupted by an unwitting medium releasing an evil spirit to prey on both the living and the dead. Green knows what the reader wants: suspense, intrigue, and romance sprinkled liberally throughout the plot. But readers may be most drawn in and grounded by the strange but fascinating rulebook for ghosts. The spirits who linger in the material world exist with a long list of needs, limitations, and consequences. The rulebook's discipline in sticking to all the rules it writes down for itself makes for cleverly tense scenarios with high stakes the reader won't expect a spirit to have to face. Who knew that playing by the rules could make for such fun from beginning to end?(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
