McPherson, whos been writing about circuses and related entertainments for several years, fills a niche with this close-up look at a variety of circuses and their performers. The book isnt so much a history of the circus as it is a survey of the modern circus in all its many forms. Although there is some history here: the father of the modern circus, Philip Astley, opened his first Amphitheatre of Equestrian Arts in 1768 (but it was a competitor, Charles Hughes, who actually used the word circus for his show); the inventor of modern clowning was Giuseppe Grimaldi (in 1778), which is why clowns are called joeys. The author introduces the reader to a number of circus owners and performers, and the book is full of stories and anecdotes that give readers a good sense of the thrills and dangers associated with the big top. The book should appeal to circus fans of all ages and levels of interest.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)
