These two titles draw their material from New York Times columns. The Curious New Yorker is based on the "FYI" column, in which readers' questions about New York are answered. Questions and answers are divided by subject into nine chapters; the first, "What's in a Name?," deals with the names of streets, bridges, neighborhoods, and buildings. The writing is tongue-in-cheek and entertaining. The answers often give a sense of the trail followed during the research for each question, quoting experts who may or may not have given the correct answer. If You're Thinking of Living In... derives from the real estate feature of the same name and gives information about 115 neighborhoods in and around New York. The book is arranged geographically and includes areas in Connecticut, Rockland County, New Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester as well as the five boroughs. Descriptions are interesting and include a good overview of each neighborhood, including rent and purchase prices, distance from midtown Manhattan, why each location is favored, and local information about shopping, schools, and the community. Both books are recommended but may be of interest only to public libraries in the New York area. The Curious New Yorker has potential for academic libraries, and librarians may enjoy the reference searches it documents.--Alison Hopkins, Queens Borough P.L., Briarwood, NY
