Author and producer Pyle (Destination Mars), who has led leadership training at NASA's Johnson Space Center for C-Suite executives, here offers a gripping history of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration; established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower) and the American space program. Pyle begins each chapter with a list of challenges NASA faced while pursuing a specific task, mission, or program; the chapters end with a list of innovations it achieved. Incorporated into each section are detailed discussions of difficulties followed by analyses of the way they were solved. Covering projects such as the rocket-powered aircraft X-15, the Lunar Module (also known as the "tissue-paper spacecraft"), and the Mars landers, the author shows he knows the organization from the inside out. The penultimate segment looks at a NASA of the future, as space travel and exploration move into the private sector. The final section attempts to translate what has worked for NASA for use in private business as a whole. While the organization has always stood out for, in Pyle's words, its "boldness, daring, and passion" and has, over the years, been innovative and collaborative in its management practices, Pyle's application of these principles to the everyday business world is unconvincing. Nevertheless, the majority of the book, as Pyle portrays pivotal moments in NASA's history, is riveting, and his writing is superb. VERDICT Recommended for anyone fascinated by the world of space travel and exploration.--Bonnie Tollefson, Cleveland Bradley Cty. P.L., TN
