Nyerges, author of the first edition, intended to lead readers back to nature with this part field guide, part reference manual. The book discusses how to make medicine and food with natural ingredients, and tells readers about the numerous poisonous plants, which are denoted by red skull and crossbones. Each entry includes photographs of the plant, and information on prominent characteristics, beneficial properties, detrimental properties, where it is found, its growing cycle, and on lore and signature. There is a pictorial key to leaf shapes, recipes using some of the plants, and procedures for plants as medicine. Well written and easily understood, this title will make a great addition where outdoor activities are popular. VERDICT Recommended for survivalists, those who spend much time outdoors, those in the invasive plant arena, and homeowners seeking to identify vegetation on their property.--Christine Sharbrough, Chelmsford P.L., MA
