Stewart follows the infamous career of Dr. Michael Swango as he lies, distorts, cheats and maneuvers his way through life and career, committing crimes against hospital staff and patients. Swango's fascination with almost undetectable poisons is even more terrifying than the outright murder he commits. Boyd Gaines is superb as narrator, taking the listener through all the facts, events and detective work that Stewart compiled. Even the gory scenes are a fascinating exposÄ of how the medical establishment ignored both the warning signs and actual reports of Swango's actions. M.B.K. (c) AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine
Dr. Michael Swango's psychopathic slate of medical murders will satisfy the true-crime lover's affinity for confusing details and botched investigations on a circuitous trail of dead bodies and near misses. Richard Poe adds appropriate drama to his reading and sometimes shows a shocked incredulity that matches our own at the discoveries and mistakes. His deep, pleasant voice is easy to understand, stumbling only a few times with medical terms. The author, the reader, and the serial killer join to provide confusing elements for a twelve-hour trial by jury of audiophiles mandated to convict on the first ballot. J.A.H.
