Body Count

This account of the hunt for a serial killer targeting prostitutes in Spokane and other cities in Washington has been updated since its first publication in 2002. Narrator Paul McLain makes no attempt to voice the numerous detectives, fearful streetwalkers, family members of the murdered, politicians, and social service activists woven into this true-crime narrative. Instead, his subtle deployment of tone, by turns ironic and respectful, enhances the facts and observations he reads by keeping listeners focused on the plights of the prostitutes and those who loved them. Details of fact finding and sometimes even lists of tests conducted are enunciated with deliberation by McLain as though in honor of those who undertook the efforts.
