K-Gr 3-Charlie and Lola anticipate a trip to the zoo, planning to make purchases from the gift shop. Lola wants a seal toy and Charlie would like a book about animals. But Charlie is a saver, and his sister is not. At the zoo, Lola buys a balloon and "pink milk," then borrows money from Charlie to pay for her toy. On the ride home, she learns that he sacrificed to help her out. Overnight, Lola is a changed person. She starts saving and conserving until she has more than enough pocket money to enable Charlie to buy another book. The illustrations are that quirky blend of art and photography that readers love.
