Davidson, who made a splash with her movement-freezing animal portraits in Shake and subsequent books, looks to a younger audience in this jubilant exploration of canine body parts. Each spread consists of a close-up of the body part in question (Nymira, a mixed-breed dog with heterochromia, is the eye model) opposite a portrait that lets readers see the whole dog. Playful typographic details add to the fun (the a in paws is turned into a paw, etc.), but all eyes will be on Davidson’s photographic portraits, which are revelatory in the detail they capture, and exude compassion and respect for each subject.
