Gr 6-10-These creative books use a pleasantly unusual angle to show how aspects of nature can inspire scientists and engineers. For instance, some scientists, inspired by the way a gecko's feet allow it to stick to surfaces, are attempting to create an adhesive tape using the structure of the lizard's foot. High-resolution photographs and a dark black and purple layout give the books a slick, stylish look, while the narrative is both fascinating and informative. Intriguing additions to science collections.

Grades 4-7 The Innovations from Nature series explores how researchers take ideas from plants and animals and turn them into projects with practical applications. Each book looks at one aspect of nature and the inventive work it has inspired. The text is usually clear, short, and to the point. With colorful photos and page design as well as plenty of white space, the books are inviting. From Termite Den introduces Zimbabwe-born architect Mick Pearce, who has designed buildings with innovative temperature-control systems inspired by the termite mounds he observed as a child. Each book concludes with a chapter highlighting the work of a few significant researchers in the field. Short but intriguing books on biomimicry.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
